Trump: Iran Deal Talks Are ‘Well on Their Way’ (2025)

By Amir Daftari Newsweek World

U.S. President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program are progressing "very well on an agreement with Iran," adding, "we're doing a lot of things, I will say-but that one is well on its way. We could have a very, very good decision, and a lot of lives will be saved."

His remarks come as Washington prepares for a third round of discussions with Tehran. Delegations from both nations have already held two rounds of talks in Oman and Italy over the past two weeks. A technical meeting is scheduled for Saturday.

Newsweek has reached out to the State Department and Iran's foreign ministry for comment.

Why It Matters

The renewed U.S.-Iran talks represent a potential turning point in one of the world's most volatile diplomatic flashpoints. If successful, the talks could not only reimpose critical restrictions on Iran's nuclear activity but also ease sanctions and deescalate tensions across the Middle East, where Israel and the United States have threatened an attack if no deal is reached. With regional stability and global nonproliferation efforts at stake, the outcome could carry lasting implications for international security.

What to Know

President Trump told reporters on Thursday, "We're having very serious meetings," adding that there are "only two options" and one is "not a good option at all." He emphasized that negotiations are "well on their way" and suggested a successful agreement could "save a lot of lives."

Senior delegations from the U.S. and Iran have already met in Muscat and Rome over the past two weeks. Trump has given negotiators a 60-day window to finalize an agreement, though an official deadline has not been announced.

Michael Anton Appointed

The next phase of talks are set to place on Saturday, led on the U.S. side by State Department Director of Policy Planning Michael Anton and U.S. Special Envoy and chief negotiator Steve Witkoff. The State Department confirmed Anton's role on Thursday, assigning him responsibility for detailing the potential deal, which would include sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on Iran's nuclear program.

European Allies Urge Iran to Engage

France, Germany, and the United Kingdom-the so-called E3-have reiterated their call for Iran to commit to diplomacy. French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christophe Lemoine said the E3 continue to support dialogue and have presented diplomatic proposals repeatedly to Tehran.

What People Are Saying

U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters: "We're having very serious meetings. And there are only two options... We could have a very, very good decision, and a lot of lives will be saved."

French Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Christophe Lemoine stated: "The only solution is a diplomatic solution and Iran must resolutely engage in this path... we will continue dialogue with the Iranians."

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said: "Talks with the United States are ongoing in the right direction. It's still too soon to judge."

What Happens Next

A new round of technical negotiations is scheduled for Saturday, with Anton and Witkoff leading efforts to solidify terms. Progress in these talks will be crucial if the parties are to reach a formal agreement before Trump's 60-day window closes.
